Candidate Statements for
Division 3. Society for Experimental Psychology and Cognitive Science
Please note that the submission of a candidate statement was voluntary, so not all candidates listed on the ballot will have a statement.
Candidate: Stephen D. Goldinger, PhD
I am honored to have been nominated for president of APA Division 3, the Society for Experimental Psychology and Cognitive Science. I have been a professor at Arizona State University for 25 years, with research interests in multiple areas of cognitive science (including speech perception, reading, face recognition, visual attention, and others). I am a fellow in Division 3, and am also a fellow in the Association for Psychological Science (APS), the Psychonomic Society, and the Society of Experimental Psychologists (SEP). Although I have not previously served as an officer for Division 3, I have held various positions in service to our field. These include multiple memberships on NIH grant review panels, being a member of the College of Reviewers for NSF, and serving currently as an Associate Editor for Psychonomic Bulletin & Review.
My goals as president-elect for Division 3 would be to continue growing our presence as a new Society, in an effort to recruit more members and extend our reach. Another key goal is to increase the diversity of our membership via outreach at the student level. Cognitive science plays an essential role in understanding human behavior, and its "hand-in-glove" partnership with neuroscience (and key funding agencies) cannot be understated. If selected as president, I will do everything possible to promote cognitive science within and beyond APA, and to attract new members to the Society.
